South Graylyn Crest will be working to help Sprout give every child a good night. Sprout’s Great Tuck In is a pajama and children’s book drive in conjunction with the Pajama Program. Many children don’t have a pair of pajamas and a bedtime book to call their own. Please join us this spring in our community drive to help those in need. Our drive will kick off in March and the first round of pickups will be on Saturday March 31st. Acme has kindly offered to provide paper bags for you to put your donation in. We will have a second drop off at the Easter Egg Hunt. Below is a link to Sprout’s Great Tuck In. Here you will find a list of needs, other ways to donate, and all about the Tuck In. We are looking for new pajamas in sizes from infants to 18 years old and new bedtime stories for all. We hope every house will consider donating 1 pair of pajamas. SGCCA has set a goal of 150 new pajamas and books to help those in need. Thank you in advance for your participation!!!

Snow Day!

It’s our first official snow of the winter season and we got around 2 inches! Your Association Board would like to remind you to drive safe and slow today. If you see any icy or slick spots which might need salt treatment in our neighborhood, please notify any one of your Board members. Have a safe and fun snow day!

South Graylyn Crest Sewer Laterals Getting Lined

If you read my earlier article, you know that preliminary measurement and clean out was being done on the sewer laterals in Brandywine Hundred and in particular, South Graylyn Crest to prepare them for lining, per an EPA mandate. Rainwater and sewage were mixing and causing sewage to flow untreated into rivers. Not Good. So New Castle County set about lining main lines and laterals into houses to prevent this leakage and overflow.

Today was the day that workers Dave (the CCTV cameraman) and Octavio came to finish the job on my lateral (they still have a lot more houses to do in South Graylyn, then they move to North Graylyn Crest).

Here you see Dave checking the video screen to see how the lining is being inserted, then Octavio watches as Dave adjusts the camera feed.

Below, you can see the steam when heat is applied to the lining which is sealing the liner. The sample piece of liner I saw at an earlier meeting looked like white felt. I could see a seam in the CCTV view, and Dave said it is sewn together, then taped along the length of the liner. Snug as a bug in a rug, I would say! Thanks, Team!

Congratulations to our 2011 Holiday Decorating Contest winners. As per the newsletter judging was completed on December 20th by the Association board. All houses lit up by 7pm on the 20th were eligible for the contest. We thank all those who participated and wish you a very happy holiday season.

South Graylyn Crest Counts on Raul and Rob To Do A Permanent Sewer Fix!

South Graylyn Crest is getting closer to having its sewers rehabbed with liners or injection grouted joints. Tree roots were eating into and clogging the County sewers–I have personal experience with this problem because even though I have a PVC line to the street, my maple tree roots were getting into the line where it meets the clay County lines.

The good news today was that Raul Lopez and Rob Scheeler are spending weeks at a time away from home in Milwaukee doing a final clean-out–getting all the roots cleared for one last time and using cameras and a computer gadget that measures the lateral running from the street to the house (which was the owners’ responsibility up to now). Then, after Christmas, and a few days back home in Milwaukee (so Rob can see his 2 month old baby), they will be back to line everything so that those EVIL ROOTS will have to go somewhere else!

As the upcoming holiday season quickly approaches I would like to take the opportunity to wish all a safe and sound holiday season. It is the annual tradition of South Graylyn Crest to host an annual Christmas decorating contest during the week of December 19th. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners which will be notified in person.

With the start of the holiday season also brings snow. Please be diligent with relocating of cars (where possible) in order to allow our snow plow contractor access to the roads. The more cars off our streets the easier it will be to create wider plow paths.

Hello South Graylyn Crest!

As the leaves are coming down and the night is starting sooner we are planning our annual Halloween Parade. With the help of Chatham, our parade and festivities will be held on October 30th at 4:00pm. Come show off you ghouls and goblins and win a prize. Stop by and have a snack and say hello to your neighbors! Don’t forget we will still be accepting donations for the food drive at the parade!
